The aircraft was originally assigned to NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) for use in aircraft icing research being conducted by NACA’s Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory at Lewis Field, Ohio. However, the facility was renamed as the Flight Propulsion Research Laboratory in 1947. In the summer of 1948 a Westinghouse 24C turbojet was installed under the B-24M's right wing to study its performance as the aircraft was flown into hazardous icing conditions. The aircraft remained assigned to NACA until the early 1950’s, when it was retired. NACA photo, from NASA historical archives.
