The aircraft was built as a P1B, and was one of the 20 Development Batch aircraft; DB/F1 would be a closer designation. It was used to develop supersonic gun-firing trials and the Red Top missile; later had upgraded avionics to F.3 and clipped fin. In 1970 it went to RAF Cranwell as 8050M until 1980 when it went to RAF Swinderby underslung beneath a Chinook. Swinderby later closed and the Lightning was bought by Ian Hancock and is displayed in the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton with his other aircraft.
